Fraley Festival of Traditional Music
Carter Caves State Resort Park
Carter County, Kentucky
Every other week, we visit the park in search of photographs and catfish sandwiches. We were surprised to find the largest crowd that we\’ve stumbled across in nearly 2 years of doing this. The Fraley festival seems to be very popular and was started decades ago by local musicians J.P. and Annadene Fraley, both now deceased. Years ago, I heard J.P. and Annadene play and I once visited his home to look at some American Chestnut trees that he had found but had no idea that their fame reached so far and so many people. After our dinner, I walked around listening to the outdoor jam sessions and found an interesting conversation with this nice lady and her husband from Iowa. He was playing an instrument called a Concertina (Wikipedia link here) that looks like an accordion but sounds like a harmonica. They demonstrated several songs that sounded very Irish to me. Hopefully we can be in a position to hear the concerts by this time next year. I found a Youtube video of J.P. and Annadene Fraley playing on their front porch (or looks like it). Here is the link.
