Shawnee Lodge & Conference Center
West Portsmouth, Ohio
Out and about today doing errands then another trip to Portsmouth, Ohio where we again viewed the Christmas trees and Shawnee Lodge, enjoyed the fireplace, and had a very enjoyable dinner in the dining room. If you\’ve followed this blog very long, you know I\’m always on the lookout for a good all American cheeseburger. They have a nice menu at Shawnee and after looking it over, I decided to to test out their hamburger even though it didn\’t offer cheese on it. I had a big surprise, this is one amazingly good burger and I\’d rank it right up with those great small double cheeseburgers at Hickies Hamburgers. Here is a fisheye shot from about 6 years ago of a cheeseburger meal at Hickies with my friend Mark Pennington, who passed away a few years ago.
Pictured above is my father, again, standing next to the Veterans Christmas Tree in the loft area of the lodge. He represents a generation of Jack-of-all-trades men, where people changed their own oil and brakes and rarely had to call in repairmen to the house. So, its been awhile but I\’ll have to close with one of my favorite quotes. A quick count shows he can do 17 of the following items:
“A human being should be able to change a diaper,
plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship,
design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts,
build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders,
give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a
new problem, pitch manure, program a computer,
cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects.”
