I’m a fan of the PBS radio show This American Life. During one of my many commutes recently, I listened to the episode entitled Dr Gilmer and Mr Hyde. This is another one of those coincidental stories. A young doctor applies for a job at a rural clinic and finds out the previous doctor had his same last name. That might be a problem, says the folks interviewing him, because the previous doctor received a life sentence for the murder of his own father. Nevertheless, they give him the job. He finds it to be odd, in the beginning the patients are leery but then they start to open up to him and tell stories of admiration of the previous doctor. About how he had helped everyone in the community and how the murder did not seem to fit his personality. The doctor becomes interested in the case and after a good bit of work, the change in personality ends up being a medical condition. If you have the time, you can might find the episode still online. The Appalachian accent of the office manager is charming and wonderfully real.
